MARTHA STOUMEN

NORCAL

Winemakers are the rockstars of the farming world, with a privileged crop and a great honkin’ megaphone at their disposal.  Martha Stoumen sees this as an opportunity and a calling to lionize genuinely responsible farming. Be the change you want to see in the world, right?  After years of white knuckled determination, Martha’s gone from fringe celebrity to central figure in a pantheon of awesome Californian winemakers. She sources grapes from parcels she leases and farms herself, supplementing with fruit from multigenerational, organic farmers.  Transparency is key for Martha as she contributes to the project of stewarding California viticulture to a brighter age.  Her wines are highly structured beauties that take inspiration from the Southern Italian masters blending ripeness, savor and vital acidity.  In a short time Martha has transformed her one-woman-show into a heart warming success story of an artisan wine business on the rise.  Way to go, dude!

POST FLIRTATION WHITE

This zesty white is the first pick of the year for MSW - a blend of directly pressed Marsanne, Rousanne, and Muscat from First Generation Farmers with an early pick of Ricetti vineyard Colombard for pithy acidity.  Aged in barrel and bottled without fining or filtration with extremely low sulfite addition..

POST FLIRTATION RED

50/50 blend of destemmed Zinfandel from Del Berba vineyard  in Contra Costa, aged in steel and whole cluster, foot crushed Carignane from Ricetti Vineyard in Redwood Valley aged in neutral barrel.  This is Martha’s workhorse red, a goldilocks wine that’s ‘just right’ with enough thirst quenching freshness for glou glou geeks and enough structure and ripeness for folk that like a little more meat on the bones.

NERO D'AVOLA

An iconic variety for Martha sourced from two complimentary sites: Benson Ranch for wild acidity and its mother vineyard, Fox Hill, for ripeness and power.  Foot crushed and fermented spontaneously in macro bins, aged in old barrels.

VENTURI VINEYARD CARIGNANE â€‹

Old vine Carignane from one of the great heritage vineyards of Mendocino.  Classic MSW style whole-cluster, foot-crushed fermentation in macro bin.  Pressed into old barrels for aging.

VENTURRI VINEYARD ZINFANDEL

Old vine Zinfandel from a block just south of the Carignane block in what was once the Russian River.  Made just like the Carignane.

BENSON RANCH SIRAH

From the vines at the top of the hill, this starts with a week of semi-carbonic maceration before pressing off to finish fermentation as juice.  Aged for a whole year in neutral barrel to let the wine come into its own.

OUT OF THE MEADOW

This coferment of Chenin, Vermintino, Trousseau Gris, Green Hungarian and Chasselas is a reflection and celebration of King Vineyard in Siusun.  All the different varieties are picked on a single day, pressed and fermented together.  Aged on gross lees in barrel through the winter.

MENDOCINO BENCHLANDS

A resurrection of one of her first cuvées, this blend of semi-carbonic Nero d'Avola and destemmed Zinfandel highlights the shared history of her sister vineyards Benson Ranch and Chiarito Vineyard.

HONEYMOON WHITE

85% partially botrytized, late harvest Colombard blended with early season Chardonnay.  Roughly, whole-cluster pressed to pull out phenolics, the two varieties fermented separately and aged in barrel on the lees without racking.  The base wines were blended shortly before bottling with a little residual sugar left over from the Colombard.

RICETTI CARIGNANE

Made only in certain vintages, the Ricetti Carignane is a contrast to Venturi Vineyard Carignane’s gamay-like qualities.  Martha sees Ricetti Carignane as more structured and Burgundian hence the substantially longer elevage.

VENTURI CARIGNANE LONG ELEVAGE

As Martha gets to know her barrel program more completely, she's discovered a fondness for a particular Bordelaise cooperage.  In 2019, Martha set aside a few of her favorite barrels of her Venturi Carignane to age extra long and bottle separately.
